Jolly's mean to Manjiro because he is jealous that the captain likes him more than himself and that he's from Japan.

I think Jolly is still alive, but Captain Whitfield decided not to bring him on the ship because he is causing mischievous with Manjiro. I also think Captian knows that Jolly is a bad person.

I agree with Alex in the fact that Jolly is still alive. I think that Manjiro like's living in Japan better because even though he's living his dream, he seems to miss his family more. Finally, I think that he is being tainted and is seeking a better understanding. My logic behind this is that Manjiro is the type of guy who is always wanting to learn new things. So maybe as he's learning about his environment (the barbarians), he's adapting too.

If they return to Japan they will be killed or be put in jeopordy. Japan's doesn't accept foreigners. “If that is so, your country does not treat foreign visitors kindly. Once a ship named the Morrison tried to enter Edo Bay in order to return some shipwrecked sailors like yourselves, but before they could even explain the reason for their visit, they were fired upon—repeatedly—and were forced to retreat.” (Pg. 105-106)

Two possible themes for “The Heart of a Samurai “ could be to help strangers even if they’re different, and to share with those in need. This book’s theme could be to help strangers even if they’re different, because the crew of the John Howland helps Manjiro and his friends by saving them from Bird Island. The theme can also be to share with those in need because the crew also share their food, clothing, and other supplies to help them survive.

The others see Manjiro as a pest because he is Japanese and the Americans aren't used to seeing a Japanese person in America.

Not necessarily does Manjiro like the captain more than his freinds, it's because Captain WhitField treats Manjiro like he were his own son and Manjiro like if he were his own Dad. Also both The captain and Manjiro had talked a lot in the ship and created a better relationship.

I think that Jolly hates Manjiro so much because Jolly might have some bad experiences with other people that go on the John Howland.

I think Manjiro learns English in a short amount of time because he is interested in their language and wants to learn it so he can communicate with them.

I believe that Manjiro learned english quickly because he overheard people saying something about certain things and decided to copy it.

I am responding to Katerina's #3. I think there is a possibility that the captain has children because in the story the captain says no, then pauses, then says no again.

Goemon doesn't trust the barbarians, because they stink, their rooms are crampy and smelly, they wasted all the whale, and they barely shower.

Yes, Manjiro misses his family because he has been away from them for so long and he misses them even more because might not ever see them again as to what Jolly had to him.

For number one the captain could marry manjiro's mom because the captain is treating him as a son or as his own kid.

I am replying to Sasha. I think Jolly hates manjiro because he is Japanese and is jealous of him because he is treated better than him. For Example, In the book Heart of a Samurai, jolly says that "Everywhere i go, i see them, naked cannibals." (p.91) This quote shows that Jolly hates manjiro and is being racist to him because he is Japanese.

I think Jolly is somewhere in America. The book stated that the crew members went back to their families. He could have thought of a horse race because he lives on a farm and is trying to be "more american".

2. I think Manjiro wanted to go to america for two reasons, one, to find out about it because he was curious, and two, because he wanted to stay with Captain Whitfield because, as Shauna pointed out, they are family now.
