They call Charles Wallace "Charles Wallace" because Charles is his first name and Wallace is his middle name. So, he probably choose to combine the two, to create Charles Wallace.

The reason we call him Charles Wallace is because "Wallace is his middle name. Charles Wallace is also a combined name from the people L'Engle dedicated the book to.

IT is basically a brain (that's the symbol of IT). Here's evidence (in Meg's point of view) "IT was a brain. A disembodied brain. An oversized brain, just enough larger than normal to be completely revolting and terrifying. A living brain that pulsed and quivered, that seized and commanded..." (pg. 174). IT controls everything in the CENTRAL Central Intelligence and responsible for all the people on Camazotz to act exactly the same.

IT is not necessarily evil, he is just impatient because people prevent him from completing his plan to make everyone and everything in the universe live and act the same. He wants every living thing to live and act the way he does because he does not believe in diversity (chapter 9).

IT is basically a brain that controls people it you destroy that brain everyone that is getting controlled by IT might get destroyed as well. That would not be good because that would destroy Charles Wallace because he is being controlled right now by IT. Page 174 and 175
